Root Cause Analysis

A method of problem-solving that seeks to identify the fundamental underlying causes of an issue rather than only addressing its symptoms.

Root cause analysis is a systematic approach to understanding why a problem exists at its deepest level. Instead of reacting to visible symptoms, this method digs deeper to uncover the underlying conditions, policies, or structures that produce the problem in the first place. One common technique is the "Five Whys," where you ask "why" repeatedly until you move past surface-level explanations and reach a foundational cause.

Consider the problem of students arriving at school hungry. A surface-level response might be to provide breakfast. But a root cause analysis would ask why students are hungry. Perhaps their families cannot afford food. Why not? Perhaps wages are too low or housing costs consume most of the household income. Why? Perhaps local economic policies have not kept pace with the cost of living. Each layer of questioning reveals a deeper issue and opens up a wider range of potential interventions, from immediate relief to systemic policy change.

For high school students, root cause analysis is a critical thinking tool that makes your work more effective. It helps you avoid the common mistake of creating solutions that treat symptoms while leaving the underlying problem intact. When you practice root cause analysis, you become better at asking the right questions, understanding complexity, and designing interventions that address problems at their source. This skill is valuable not only in entrepreneurship but in academics, careers, and everyday decision-making.
