Circular Economy

An economic model designed to eliminate waste by keeping products, components, and materials in use for as long as possible through reuse, repair, and recycling.

A circular economy is an alternative to the traditional linear economy, which follows a "take, make, dispose" pattern. In a linear system, raw materials are extracted, manufactured into products, used, and then thrown away. A circular economy redesigns this process so that waste is minimized or eliminated entirely. Products are built to last, made from materials that can be safely returned to the earth or reused, and systems are designed so that what was once considered waste becomes a resource for something new.

The circular economy is built on three core principles: designing out waste and pollution, keeping products and materials in use, and regenerating natural systems. Examples range from clothing companies that take back worn garments to create new fabrics, to electronics manufacturers that design devices for easy repair and upgrade rather than replacement. At the community level, circular economy thinking can drive initiatives like tool libraries, composting programs, and refill stations that reduce single-use packaging.

For high school students, the circular economy is an exciting framework because it turns environmental problems into design challenges. Instead of asking how to manage waste, it asks how to prevent waste from being created in the first place. If you are interested in environmental sustainability, understanding circular economy principles can inspire innovative project ideas. You might design a school swap program for textbooks and supplies, launch a repair cafe in your community, or develop a business plan for upcycling materials that would otherwise end up in a landfill.
